Dear Members and Friends,
I hope you’ve had a good week. If the conversations I’ve had with a number of BEI members this week are anything to go by, it’s been another busy one.
It’s no surprise that one of our most heavily subscribed virtual events of the autumn programme was the first in our series on Climate Change Intersections. Every area of our work is affected by climate change and the range of technological, policy and interventions designed to combat, but also to mitigate, climate change.
But what really matters is what we can do about it, and that means granular change in every sector. That’s where BEI and our members come in: working in many of the areas central to the climate challenge, you will have the experience and case studies to help find the answers. In this session, we looked at the various intersections between climate change and international development. We were delighted to be joined by Stephen Mooney, senior climate and environment adviser and team leader of the Climate, Energy Environment and Water team at FCDO, who described the mechanisms FCDO has in place to ensure climate considerations are central to all programming. We also heard from our members DT Global, Integrity and Crown Agents about the lessons we can draw from their experience. As well as the examples of what they – and the other members who contributed to the discussion – are doing themselves, the key to success in so many cases is partnership. What strikes me is that to stand a chance of success against such a tough challenge we need to be more innovative and open-minded than ever about the range of partners we work with. More details on the webinar from Sasha here.
There are more events to come in our Intersections series, which I’m sure will be equally popular. The next sessions are on the Intersections of Climate Change with Education (11 October) and with Conflict Prevention (31 October) and members are encouraged to get in touch with Katie if they are interested in speaking at future sessions in the pipeline – including migration, food security, GBV and others.
Looking back, I am delighted to have heard so much positive feedback from our recent events with the Minister for Education of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We are working closely with the Saudi Embassy on the best ways to follow up the discussions with the Ministers, to build on the connections and to explore new opportunities. More soon.
Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing you at some of the other events in the programme for the coming weeks and wish you a good weekend ahead.
Warm Regards,
David Landsman
