BEI Weekly Update — 22nd January 2021

Dear Members and Friends,

This week the world entered a new era in geopolitical dynamics following the inauguration of the new US President Joe Biden, as the country looks to re-examine its global role in areas such as trade, finance, climate, and security. There is promise of re-engagement with the world, and for UK business the expectation is that the mutually beneficial relationship will enhance opportunities for both sides.

This week I joined the Infrastructure Exports: UK (IE:UK) board meeting. The Department for International Trade (DIT) provided an update on the great progress being made on new trade agreements. In addition, Board Member teams tasked with researching IE:UK priority markets presented their initial recommendations, and some great opportunities for UK infrastructure expertise will emerge; of course, G2G engagement will be important in driving collaboration and helping provide viable opportunities for the sector.

Members will have noticed that the Cabinet Office currently have an open Green Paper consultation on “transforming public procurement”. The Green Paper provides a great opportunity to overhaul public procurement and we look forward to member engagement in contributing to the consultation process.

Following up on last week’s invitation to let us know if you have an interest in joining the Climate Change- Net Zero working group, you will have received an email from us, requesting your input and feedback as we start building our activities programme for 2021. We would appreciate member feedback by responding to this SHORT QUESTIONNAIRE, with a focus Climate Change/Net Zero in the in the run up to CoP26.

Next Wednesday 27th January from 18:00 we are excited to be hosting Andrew Griffith MP, UK’s Net Zero Business Champion, as he provides a brief on his role and on HMG’s plans and priorities, and the role of business. This event is most suitable for senior level management. REGISTER HERE
