BEI Weekly Update - 5th June 2026

Dear Members and Friends,

The highlight of my BEI week was undoubtedly our round table with Dr Tareq Abu Ghazaleh, the Minister of Investment of Jordan, held yesterday in collaboration with the Embassy of Jordan and our sister organisation, the D Group. Members and guests from a wide range of sectors had the opportunity to hear from the Minister about Jordan’s economic development strategy and planned projects. For me, there’s nothing like engaging face-to-face with the decision-makers. We will continue to bring opportunities like this to our members whenever we can. This week we also held two webinars. First, on Tuesday we were joined by Amanda McLoughlin, FCDO Development Director in Ethiopia.  With the UK's international development strategy based on the “four shifts”, including from an aid-based model to a partnership-focused approach that emphasises long-term economic investment, trade and stability in the Horn of Africa, Amanda offered us updates on the current context on the ground, as well as crucial insights into FCDO's development strategy in the country.

On Wednesday we held a session on Strengthening Equitable and Inclusive Health that explored gender and disability inclusion, with a deep dive into Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) programming in international development. Many thanks to our expert panellists: Andrea Pregel, Senior Global Technical Lead for Inclusive Health at Sightsavers; Sadie Watson, Managing Director and Diksha Mahara, Consultant at IOD PARC; and Anisa Berdellima, Global Director of Evidence and Impact at MSI Reproductive Choices.  

Next week, we look forward to hosting two webinars, both on Wednesday 10 June. From 09:00-10:00 BST, we will explore procurement opportunities with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The session will be an opportunity to learn about opportunities to work with DFAT and to provide a platform for DFAT to meet UK private-sector and NGO delivery partners. In the afternoon, from 14:00-15:00 BST, we will explore market opportunities in Rwanda. This session will bring together senior representatives from the British Chamber of Commerce Rwanda (BCCR), the British High Commission in Kigali, and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) to provide an overview of current market conditions, priority sectors and emerging opportunities. Looking ahead, as part of London EdTech Week we will host a panel on 18 June from 14:00-17:00 BST on opportunities for Africa-UK EdTech partnerships that enable new pathways for youth skills and employment. This event will be held in partnership with the Africa EdTech Exchange (AEE). If you are interested in attending, register here. Our London Climate Action Week programme is shaping up well.  Here’s a list of the sessions we will be hosting.  Some are already open for registration, but please also keep a look out for the others:

• Not Losing Ground: Climate Action in an Increasingly Fragile World – panel discussion on how to sustain climate ambitions in the world’s most fragile settings – Tuesday 23 June, 13:00 arrival for 13:30-15:00 panel.
• Scaling AI-led Innovation in Climate Resilience – a short film premiere, panel and networking reception with BEI member Resurgence – Wednesday 24 June, 18:30 arrival for 19:00-20:30 session and 20:30-22:00 networking.
• A launch of a new BEI paper (Water Risk & Finance: Bridging the Gap) – Wednesday 24 June, 13:30 arrival for 14:00-15:30, followed by networking. Registration link coming soon.
• Inclusivity in Early Warning Systems (EWS) – a webinar exploring inclusivity in EWS and challenges faced in ensuring access to EWS amidst changing climate stressors – Thursday 25th, 11:00-12:30 BST. Registration link coming soon.

• Friday 26th June - Friday 3rd July 2026: Meet the Ambassador Series -  Save the date for British Expertise International's annual "Meet the Ambassador" Series, which will see sessions taking place between the dates of Friday 26th June to Friday 3rd July. • Date and Time TBC: Working with the Inter-American Development Bank - Preceding the Inter-American Development Bank's (IDB) visit to the UK in early June, join us for this virtual session exploring the IDB's work as a principle source of financing, technical expertise and knowledge for sustainable and inclusive development.
