In 2019 Development Gateway and DFID sought to better understand the involvement of data within the department, and its use as a tool in the decision-making process. The study provided a thorough and detailed overview, describing DFID as one of departments at the forefront of harnessing the benefits of data. Joining us to discuss the findings of this study are Claudia Wells, Director of Data Use at Development Initiatives, who leads on the development and implementation of Development Initiatives’ data use strategy and the authors of this report, who will be able to provide members with key insights into the successes and limitations of the incorporation of data into the policy process.
The development sector is at the forefront of evidence-based decision making and integrating monitoring and evaluation skills into policy. However, the complexity of the problems that development programmes try to address means there is constant need for data to continue improving our understanding of these issues, and more significantly, how the data can better inform the policy design process.
Whilst data is a tool that is primarily used for external projects, it’s internal use within a business to help a team work more efficiently or provide greater understanding is also greatly valued. For instance, the 2019 landscape study report noted that an area to improve was the ability to present synthesised data to senior managers without compromising the picture shown by the raw data. Panellists will present on key issues like this and more, providing members with key takeaways to help improve with their relationship with data and internal communication.
Join our expert panel as we discuss the role of data within the Development sector and have your questions answered.
