The UK-Africa Investment Summit in January 2020 spoke to the importance of the UK’s relationship with Nigeria for the British business presence in the wider region. Among the investments announced was £80 million for a new facility in Nigeria to channel UK expertise in government infrastructure, and £45 million for a new Digital Access Programme in a number of countries including Nigeria.
This event will provide British Expertise members with a country-specific analysis of business challenges and opportunities for UK companies operating in Nigeria, exploring the current political and economic landscape. It’s a must join for any organisations currently working in, or looking to work in, the country - and will include deep, sector appropriate insights into how to best do business in Nigeria, the benefits of working in the country, and more.
Nigeria has the largest population and economy in Africa. Trade between the UK and Nigeria has grown substantially in recent years, increasing by 14.4% from 2018 to 2019 to a value of £5.1 billion. An infrastructure gap across Nigeria’s economy, the need for more investment in energy and the government’s Economic Growth and Recovery Plan are all driving the need for more UK expertise in Nigeria. However, the turmoil caused by Covid-19 and the crash in oil prices is also presenting significant challenges for the Nigeria economy.
The UK has particularly strong political relations with Nigeria. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has said that following Britain’s departure from the EU, ‘a renewed sense that there are ties that bind us through the Commonwealth, and a concerted effort to grow those links through trade, could act as a spur to encourage togetherness’.
This event will be held on Microsoft Teams.
The discussion will aim to answer as many questions as possible - Members are free to email questions in advance.
