Globally, it is hard to think of a sector that is not being transformed by digital technology, driving greater efficiency and effectiveness. The practical application of AI and Machine Learning is already well established across industries that touch our everyday lives.
The situation is no different for the development sector. There are significant opportunities to leverage digital technology to support the sector – from more effective modelling and forecasting of likely issues that will arise through to more effective management of implementation of programmes and monitoring of progress. AI and Machine Learning can help predict with precision the spread of a new pathogen or when and where extreme weather events may take place helping identify the populations and communities that will be directly affected and enabling more efficient and effective mitigation strategies to be put in place.
However, embracing digital and AI-related solutions are not without their potential challenges – from the practical and cultural implications through to the challenges raised by data compliance and ethical concerns over the sources of data and the way that data is analysed and applied. Challenges that have been bought into sharp focus by recent events in Ukraine and Afghanistan, and by the growing cyber threat to states, organisations and individuals.
This discussion will provide an overview of the opportunities and risks of embracing digital solutions, approaches being deployed on a global basis and the ways that policy makers and practitioners alike are embedding digital tech and AI into their daily operation.
With more panellists to be confirmed, we are delighted to welcome Helen McElhinney, Head of Policy ICRC UK and Ireland, who will discuss the opportunities and risks and the practical ways they can be navigated; Alex Grainger, Associate Director and Head of Geospatial at Tetra Tech, who will share some practical examples of using AI and machine learning in the development sector; and William Morrison of MetricsLed, who will give a practical summary of their experiences to date in deploying transformational digital tools and techniques to drive more effective delivery of ODA-related projects for HMG and other BEI clients.
The panellists will participate in a Q&A session with the audience of peers, stakeholders and policy makers.
Guests are invited to join for a networking reception following the panel event, hosted by British Expertise International in association with MetricsLed (formerly Skotkonung) to mark their ten-year anniversary and the launch of their new brand.
