Skills and Training WG: Standards

Join us for our quarterly in-person Skills & Training Working Group with presentation from the British Standards Institution (BSI) and Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) on the topic of Standards. This discussion will provide an overview of what standards are and their importance in the education sector.

Standards are vital in ensuring that quality is maintained within services between providers domestically and abroad. The development of accepted standards is growingly difficult; however, standards provide the link vital in the recognition of skills and qualifications.

Standards are a guideline which contains technical specifications or specific criteria that prescribe guidelines, rules, or characteristics for services, products, processes, or systems. As a tried and tested way to work more efficiently and effectively, standards help organisations improve their performance, reduce their risk, and help them be more sustainable.

BSI: British Standards Institution

BSI is the UK’s National Standards Body and was the world’s first national standards body. By publishing over 3,100 standards annually, BSI helps improve the quality and safety of products, services and systems through engaging with industry experts, government bodies, trade associations, businesses of all sizes and consumers.

SQA: Scottish Qualifications Authority

SQA are the national accreditation and awarding body for Scotland. SQA engage with learners, schools, colleges and training providers across Scotland, the rest of the UK and internationally, to develop, maintain, and improve a framework of qualifications, and to set and maintain standards for many other awarding bodies, and accredited qualifications.
