Join British Expertise International on 18th May from 12:30 – 14:30 for an in-person ‘Meet the Trade Envoy’ roundtable with the UK’s Trade Envoy for Bangladesh, Rushanara Ali MP. Rushanara will provide members with an overview of the future developments and market priorities in Bangladesh, as well as upcoming Government-to-Government plans and future engagements between the UK and Bangladesh which may be of interest.
The United Kingdom is the third largest export destination of Bangladesh, and the country maintains a strong and positive balance with the UK. On 19th February in Dhaka, the UK and Bangladesh held their second Trade and Investment Dialogue covering a range of trade and investment issues, including mutual barriers to trade and market access. The UK and Bangladesh discussed cooperation in areas such as graduation from the Least Development Country (LDC) status, investment cooperation, pharmaceuticals, ease of doing business, financial sector development, higher education provision, taxation issues, and intellectual property protection. Ultimately, there was an agreement on the importance of achieving a stronger and enhanced diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
Rushanara Ali has been the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow since 2010. She is currently a member of the Treasury Select Committee and the UK Trade Envoy to Bangladesh. Rushanara has previously served as Labour’s Shadow Education Minister and Shadow International Development Minister. Prior to her election in 2010, Rushanara was Associate Director of the Young Foundation. She has also worked at the Home Office, Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Institute for Public Policy Research. Rushanara is the co-founder and chair of the charity One Million Mentors and Uprising.
Attend this closed roundtable to gain valuable insights from the Trade Envoy into the future developments and market priorities in Bangladesh, plans for bilateral engagement this year and beyond, as well as any upcoming physical and virtual trips planned for 2023 which may be of interest. This will also offer an excellent opportunity for members to share their organisations’ current priorities and experiences in Bangladesh, the ease of doing business, and some of the challenges and market access barriers they have encountered. There will be an opportunity at the end of the session to engage in a Q&A session with the Trade Envoy.
