What does the UK government’s foreign policy on the “Indo-Pacific tilt” really mean? Join us as British Ambassadors from Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines as they share their insights on the region highlighting political and economic updates in the region, areas of key opportunities for UK plc as well as the region’s Covid-19 response and recovery plans.
Whilst the immediate economic climate is uncertain, the region is still a significant player in the world’s economy and opportunities for business will be sure to continue emerging. Southeast Asia has routinely set the benchmark for Covid-19 responses, sheltering both the population and its economies. However, as cases start to increase and health systems begin to be stretched, focus on economic growth is once again shifted. Four out of the six major regional economies have seen economic contraction in the first three months of 2021, with only Vietnam and Singapore posting year on year growth rates.
Driven by the growing infrastructure development and the spread of mobile phones, notably in Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, the digital technology sector in the region is currently booming. More mature markets like Singapore and Malaysia have diversified eco-systems for tech and digital service companies with great opportunities. Across the region, the challenges of Climate Change are both very real and urgent.
