

Algeria:
James Downer was appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in January 2025. He took over from Ms Sharon Wardle who previously held the post from 2021-2024. Prior to his appointment, James has had a long and distinguished career for the foreign office. He has held positions ranging from Senior Advisor, Counter-Terrorism Policy Department to the Deputy Head of Mission in Baghdad and Acting Deputy High Commissioner in Islamabad. James has a strong working background in the Middle East and North Africa and brings a wealth of experience to his current role. Most recently, James worked for the Middle East & North Africa Directorate, which included crisis responses to Israel/Gaza and the Red Sea.
