Directly following the Presidential Elections in Uzbekistan, due to be held on 24th October 2021, we are delighted to welcome the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Said Rustamov, for an in-person working lunch.
Members will have the opportunity to hear the Ambassador’s views on the potential outcomes of the election, both in terms of future economic policy and potential spending decisions in areas such sustainable infrastructure, social reform and human capital development, and what this means for bilateral relations going forward.
Uzbekistan boasts one of the most diversified economies in Central Asia. It is in gradual transition to a market economy, with plans to reduce the number of large state-owned enterprises (SOEs) by 75% over 2021-2025. Over the past few years the country has seen significant reform, as well as increasing cooperation with human rights NGOs, making Uzbekistan more open and more attractive to foreign business and investors. Uzbekistan is playing an increasingly important role in creating conditions for regional solutions in Central Asia, especially with regards to Afghanistan.
Ambassador Said Rustamov was designated as the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United Kingdom in October 2019. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the State of Israel. Ambassador Rustamov started his diplomatic career in 1997 in the USA & Americas Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and working on American Affairs for almost a decade. During his career Mr. Rustamov also served as a DCM at the Embassy of Uzbekistan in USA (2014-2017), Executive Assistant to the Minister (2012-2013), headed the Forecasting and Strategy Planning Department at the Directorate-General for Foreign Policy Strategy and Analysis in the MFA of Uzbekistan (2011-2012), worked in the Embassy of Uzbekistan to Spain(2010-2011).
