Context
Jordan, Iraq and Kurdistan, and Lebanon are all situated in the Middle East region. All four countries share socio-economic pressures, cases of institutional failings, supply-chain disruptions since the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising food and fuel prices as a result of the war on Ukraine. Furthermore, they are also amongst the top 5 host countries of millions of Syrian refugees.
In Jordan, the country has almost achieved its ambition for universal access to primary education, with 97% of children enrolled in primary school. Nevertheless, refugees and children with disabilities have not benefited from school enrolment progress. Priorities in education include more inclusive and quality education, teachers training, and infrastructure.
In Iraq there are an estimated 3.2 million children out of school (UNICEF), with girls being largely underrepresented in primary and secondary schools. Years of conflict in the country, has devastated infrastructure and displaced children from their homes, and has reduced the Iraqi government’s capacity to deliver quality education.
Kurdistan, is also contending with displaced persons, few modern facilities and classrooms, and there being no well-defined pedagogy. According to the Ministry of Education, priority areas in education include increasing educational teaching standards, enhancing higher education and scientific research, education infrastructure, supplies, WASH facilities in schools and qualified teachers.
Lebanon
Over the past few years, Lebanon has undergone an economic and financial crisis, dealt with the fallout from Covid-19, and the devastation of the Beirut Blast in 2020. This has had huge consequences for the most vulnerable in society and has weakened their education system. Areas of opportunity range from supporting the digitalisation of the education system, teacher training, and quality education.
