This webinar offers a focused deep dive into South Africa’s infrastructure landscape, exploring opportunities, challenges and areas for collaboration. Featuring speakers from the UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT), the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and Infrastructure South Africa (ISA), the session will highlight how strategic partnerships and technical assistance are unlocking investment and driving sustainable infrastructure development.
The UK–South Africa trade relationship remains strong, with total trade reaching £11.4 billion in the year to Q4 2024, a 7.4% rise from the previous year. The UK is prioritising investment in infrastructure, energy and technology, while tackling market access barriers and business risk perceptions.
The UK–South Africa G2G Infrastructure Partnership is a strategic initiative to accelerate infrastructure delivery in South Africa by addressing systemic barriers and promoting UK expertise in engineering, design and project management. Launched in July 2025 by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the South African Minister for Public Works & Infrastructure, the partnership enables direct collaboration between the two governments, helping to fast-track high-impact projects and positioning UK firms for success. A cross-HMG initiative, the partnership draws on ODA funding from the FCDO and non-ODA funding from DBT to accelerate the pipeline of major projects, strengthen the quality of public asset management, and improve infrastructure delivery at municipal level, leveraging UK expertise and positioning UK firms to benefit from the commercial opportunities created.
Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) is the national body responsible for leading South Africa’s infrastructure strategy, planning, and delivery. It serves as the single point of entry for infrastructure investment, coordinating high-impact economic and social projects aligned with national development goals. ISA supports project sponsors by helping develop robust business cases and facilitating access to funding through its Centre of Excellence and Portfolio Management Office. ISA was established with support from the UK’s Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA), which provided technical expertise and shared best practices – such as the adoption of the UK’s Five Case Model for project preparation – under a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening South Africa’s infrastructure delivery capacity.
