Join us on Wednesday 22nd February as we host a senior delegation from Hong Kong, led by the Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of the HKSAR Government, Mr. Ricky LAU, to showcase the massive infrastructure development and opportunities in Hong Kong and to enhance collaboration with industry stakeholders in UK.
The UK and Hong Kong have a long standing mutually beneficial relationship, with bilateral trade increasing by 11.2% in 2021-2022 and further growth expected. The 2022 Policy Address for Hong Kong, delivered in October 2022, announced large scale development programmes to address the upcoming economic and social needs of Hong Kong. This is in a bid to stimulate the economy, create job opportunities and to increase international investment, with the governments annual capital works expected to exceed HK$100 billion in the coming years.
The Policy Address encompassed many projects, such as the Northern Metropolis development, the Kau Yi Chau Artificial Islands, the Second Ten-year Hospital Development Plan, and the Railways and Major Roads Beyond 2030 plan, etc.:
The 2021 Policy Address proposed developing the northern part of New Territories into the Northern Metropolis, providing a vision for the positioning, plans and directions for northern New Territories over the next 20 years. The Northern Metropolis covers an area of 300 square km (accounting for a quarter of land in Hong Kong) and contribute to further developing about 600 hectares of housing and economic land, thereby bringing about as many as 190 000 additional residential units.
The development of the KYCAI can provide about 1000 hectares of land for meeting part of the medium to long-term land requirement of Hong Kong. The KYCAI also includes a network of strategic transport infrastructure, i.e. The Hong Kong Island West – Northeast Lantau Link and Hong Kong Island West – Hung Shui Kiu Rail Link.
Under the Second Ten-year HDP (Year 2026 to 2035), a total of 19 projects involving about HK$270 billion would be covered. Upon completion of the whole plan, there would be over 9 000 additional beds and other hospital facilities that would largely meet the projected service demand up to 2036.
UK expertise is sought after in the engineering and construction industry. In order to deliver the large portfolio of infrastructure and urban development projects – many of which are still in the preliminary stages – there is a need for knowledge sharing and capacity building.
Join us as we host senior officials from the Hong Kong Government’s Development Bureau to learn about the infrastructure opportunities in this market for a roundtable session. We will learn more about the Northern Metropolis, where it is envisioned the northern part of the New Territories seeks large scale development in the housing sector, as well as the development of the Kau Yi Chau Artificial Islands, which will provide 1000 hectares of land to provide for the medium to long term land requirements of Hong Kong and many more other exciting opportunities for UK business.
