Join British Expertise International for an online webinar on 25th May from 10:00 – 11:30 on ‘health in a changing climate’. We will be joined by international SOS, Options, Adam Smith International and Crown Agents who will cover the impact of climate change on healthcare and global healthcare security systems, as well as their work in increasing resilience of communities to the future impacts of climate change.
The impact of climate change on global health has been severe and far-reaching, affecting many social and environmental determinants of health such as access to clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food, and secure shelter. It is well known that climate change related health risks will be particularly felt by vulnerable, marginalised and disadvantaged groups around the world.
The World Health Organisation predicts that between 2030 and 2050, the impacts of climate change will cause around 250,000 additional deaths per annum. Addressing climate change, as well as building countries and communities resilience to a changing climate, is therefore essential to safeguarding the health and well-being of the global population.
International SOS delivers customised health, security risk management, and well being solutions to their clients. They will speak on the impact of climate on health and global health security, and what this means for health systems in terms of their risk outlooks and operational planning for shocks and the impact of climate change.
Options are an international development consultancy organisation working in the health sector to transform the health of women and girls in developing countries. They will cover their efforts on improving resilience through their health interventions, referring to examples from Nepal, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. They will also present their conceptual framework and the results achieved.
Adam Smith International (ASI) is a global advisory firm that works locally to transform lives by making economies stronger, societies more stable, and governments more effective. They specialise in the design and delivery of complex projects for bilateral and multilateral development partners which help to address environmental, economic, social, and governmental challenges faced in developing countries. ASI is a proudly certified B Corp, demonstrating that their work meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. They will speak on climate governance and planning touching on NDCs, adaptation plans, and horizontal and vertical coordination.
Crown Agents is a non-profit international development organisation with a portfolio that spans health, governance, supply chains, logistics, crisis response and climate, energy &sustainability. They will speak on three key pillars of their approach: policy and planning for climate & health; climate resilient health facility infrastructure; and supporting the development of resilient low carbon health supply chains.
Together, these organisations will offer their perspectives on the potential future impacts of climate change on healthcare systems and the actions that must be taken to enhance their resilience. They will share their insights on what lies ahead and discuss the necessary steps that need to be taken to ensure that healthcare systems are prepared to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
