Join us as we host Kemi Williams, Development Director in Tanzania for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), who will present FCDO’s development strategy, programming and pipeline of opportunities in Tanzania.
Tanzania has a population of 62 million, the fifth largest in Africa. It also has one of the fastest urbanisation rates globally, with Dar es Salaam projected to become the world's third largest mega city by 2100. The country has a history of political and economic stability, abundant natural resources, and a strategic location in the region as a gateway to East Africa. Tanzania has seen steady economic growth over the past two decades and achieved middle-income status in 2020. Despite the impact of COVID-19, GDP growth accelerated to 5.6% at the beginning of 2024. However, poverty remains high, and many social indicators remain at low-income country levels. Only 40% of the population have access to electricity, 90% still use charcoal or firewood for cooking, and only a third of children complete lower secondary school. High population growth and deforestation are significant challenges, and the country is highly vulnerable to climate change, with corruption and organised crime rising concerns.
FCDO currently delivers a range of programmes across the country which aim to address these challenges. The ODA budget for Tanzania in the financial year 2024/2025 is £61.3M, which is over double the budget from the last financial year 2023/2024. FCDO priority focus areas in Tanzania are: economic growth and climate action; education and health; governance; combatting crime and corruption; and inclusion (including women and girls and refugees).
During this event, Kemi will offer us updates on the current context on the ground as well as insights into FCDO’s development strategy in the country.
