After an action packed two weeks of fierce negotiations, plenaries and sessions during COP28, attendees are now returning home to begin preparations for the year ahead. The need to “transition away from fossil fuels” left many mixed feelings due to a lack of stringent language and obligation, with others content with the recognition for this necessary action at such a high level.
The energy sector in particular will benefit as 118 governments have now pledged to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030. The agreements made will have, in theory, left the 1.5C target reachable, but only if addressed with renewed vigour and carefully thought out strategy. Policy makers and investors face a huge range of short term pressures as they must adapt to the changing climate, and renew efforts to curb the systemic causes of this crisis – the impacts of which are being felt throughout industry, civil society and the economy.
Despite the mixed feelings left by the results of this year’s COP, many BEI members were in attendance to showcase their commitment to combating the climate crisis and the incredible work they are doing around the globe.
We will be hosting a session with our members CDP, Phyla Earth and Crown Agents (with more members to be confirmed) to speak to us about their experiences at COP28, their main takeaways, and their hopes for the future.
