British Expertise International’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group is delighted to welcome the Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Women and Work, Jess Phillips MP. Jess will present the APPG’s latest report which examined a wide spectrum of factors that play a role in stunting progress for women in today’s economy, including the Gender Pay Gap as well as issues usually given less airtime, such as the effect of the menopause on a woman’s working life, the cost of childcare and barriers for women entrepreneurs.
All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are informal cross-party groups of members of both Houses of Parliament with a common interest in particular issues.
‘The Cost of Being a Woman at Work’ report is the culmination of twelve months of research work by the Women and Work APPG, which has included group meetings with business leaders, academics and those representing charities and organisations who can provide an authentic insight into the issues facing women today.
The report’s recommendations include:
- Introducing mandatory gender and ethnicity pay gap reporting for all companies of 100+ employees, in addition to the development of mandatory follow-up action plans to address the gap if present.
- Government working with employers to discourage salary history questions during recruitment, as well as discouraging questions on gaps in employment history, as those tend to harm women who have taken career breaks for childcare purposes.
- Increasing statutory maternity pay to match the living wage to harness female talent – as women are currently driven out of the workforce by childcare costs.
- Ensuring that basic needs like HRTs are granted and introduce menopause as a protected characteristic.
- Changes to the pension system, including ensuring pension contributions are considered through divorce proceedings, applying auto-enrolment to workers from age 18 (rather than age 22) and employers’ contributions throughout parental leave.
