As part of the British Expertise International climate series, we are delighted to announce a three-part virtual webinar series, this series aims to showcase and deep dive into BEI and UK expertise into three strategically important climate related fields. When COP26 gets underway, we will be hosting themed events on Nature-based Solutions, the Built Environment and Extreme Weather, the current subgroups of our Climate Change Working Group. In each of these three sessions, experts from across the BEI membership and the wider UK climate related sectors will showcase their latest work and insights on the topic. Members will be presented with a comprehensive overview of each subject and understand how UK plc can continue to advance and lead the way in these critical areas.
The intensity and frequency of extreme weather events has risen around the globe, characterised by heat waves, heavy downpours, hurricanes, or wildfires. These examples are perhaps the most visible result of climate change and are already impacting countries and their populations both economically and socially. Studies show that in 2020 extreme weather events led to 98.4 million people being affected, 7 million people being displaced according to the Internal Displacement and Monitoring Centre, and US$ 210 billion in economic losses, with insured losses of US$ 82 billion.
The expertise of BEIs Extreme Weather Risk and Climate Resilience Group (EWCRG) encompasses weather and climate services, urban resilience, climate risk reduction, capacity building in climate adaptation, and innovating in climate resilience financing. Join our webinar event to hear from our panel of experts working in this field, both addressing and exhibiting their experiences, challenges and trends in extreme weather and climate resilience. Members will be informed by expert panellists on the how we understand extreme weather and climate resilience, showcasing their work and trends for concept and industry.
Join us as we look to deep dive into these key thematic areas, hear from members of the Climate Change Working Group, experts in the relevant fields and have your questions answered in a moderated Q&A
