This policy brief summarises an important discussion between members of the British Expertise International Education Working Group (following the publication of the Recover Learning, Rebuild Education report), Ministers of Education from all ASEAN countries, and UK government officials, which was held in March 2022 to share knowledge and support the remediation of education challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Recover Learning and Rebuild Education in the ASEAN Region Roundtable was co-hosted by the ASEAN Secretariat; the Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam; British Expertise International (BEI), Her Majesty’s Department for International Trade in the United Kingdom (DIT); and the Cambridge Partnership for Education. The resulting brief includes recommendations for policy derived from the contributions and insights of the attending ministries. These included representatives from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The recommendations are organised according to three overarching themes: learning loss and accelerated learning, access to education, and building resilience in education systems. These themes capture not only a wide range of challenges confronted by ASEAN member states' education systems, but also cover a number of inventive, proactive and innovative solutions implemented over the last two years.
To launch this policy brief, we are bringing together ASEAN member state diplomatic delegations to the UK, government officials and education specialists. We will also welcome key speakers on the importance of UK-ASEAN partnership. There will be opportunities for Q&A and networking.
