BEI Weekly Update - 5th September 2025

Dear Members and Friends,

I hope you’ve returned refreshed from a good summer break. For us, the “new term” feeling is reinforced by our new location on One Birdcage Walk, with newly painted offices and meeting rooms as well as access to the conference facilities of IMechE for our larger events. We look forward to welcoming members and friends to the heart of Westminster very soon.

A new term isn’t complete without new faces, and we’re delighted to welcome Ana Botelho, who has taken up the role of Interim Account Lead for education, skills and international development while we work on identifying a permanent successor to Luisa. I know that Ana has already been in touch with many members: she’s looking forward to meeting many of you in person soon.To complement our individual engagement with members, which remains the heart of what we do, we have once again an exciting and wide-ranging programme of events for the autumn season, both in Birdcage Walk and online. Our plans are highlighted in the attached infographic, but please watch out for additions and more detail on individual events as they come out.

First up is a joint event with our sister organisation D Group, “Turning Water Risk into Resilience.” The event, delivered in partnership with the Global Summit series, will provide UK organisations with the strategies and insights needed to safeguard their operations and adapt to future water-related challenges. We will be joined by Andy Roby, Senior Water Security Advisor at FCDO, Simon Ayley, Director of Strategic Growth Partnerships at WRc, Charlie Stratford, Head of Business and Partnership Development at UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and Jonathan Clark, Associate Director of Data Centres & Advanced Technology at Gleeds.

The following week, we look forward to two online events with our partners across government. On 16th September, “Meet UKEF: Asia & the Middle East”, which will offer UK organisations a valuable opportunity to explore UKEF's diverse offerings, engage directly with UKEF stakeholders and gain key insights on export markets in Asia and the Middle East.

On 18th September, we look forward to “Infrastructure Opportunities in South Africa”, which will offer a focused deep dive into South Africa’s infrastructure landscape and provides an insight into the UK–South Africa G2G Infrastructure Partnership - a strategic initiative launched in July 2025.

The next few months show every sign of being as eventful (to use a euphemism) as the year so far. The models we’ve all become used to – in the developed world as much as in emerging and developing markets – are being disrupted at pace and we can no longer rely on established pipelines to provide future opportunities. The good news is that we still see huge demand for “British expertise” from the most dynamic markets around the world and that the opportunities are far from exhausted. As we all innovate in response to the changing landscape, deciding where to invest effort and presenting what we can do to meet new visions of “what success looks like”, BEI’s unique networks are at your disposal. Please use them and let us know how we can help you further.

On a logistical note, just a reminder that our in-person events will take place at our new premises at One Birdcage Walk – located in the heart of Westminster and ideally positioned near many of our key stakeholders across Westminster and Whitehall, we look forward to welcoming you to the new space. The building offers a range of excellent event spaces, giving us the capacity and flexibility to enhance the delivery of the events and briefings that are a key part of what we do.

Finally, our partners at DBT, along with the British Embassy in Saudi Arabia, are inviting UK companies to join the UK Ports and Maritime Trade Mission to Saudi Arabia which is taking place from 28 September to 2 October 2025. This high-profile mission will visit Jeddah and Dammam Ports and participate in the Saudi Maritime and Logistics Congress. More information can be found, here.

Wishing you a restful weekend, and we look forward to seeing you at our new offices next week.

With best wishes

David Landsman
