Dear Members and Friends,
This week, the UK Government’s spending review revealed a bolstering of departmental spending towards defence; science, innovation and technology; health and social care; and border security funding. The FCDO was among one of the hardest hit, with spending set to fall 8.3% over the next three years, and Rachel Reeves restating that increases to defence spending were made possible by cuts to foreign aid.
With clear budgetary constraints for the UK’s work internationally, it is increasingly important for us to leverage our members’ wealth of experience and expertise. On that note, we are excited to continue supporting the members of FCDO’s SME Advisory Forum to engage with the wider SME community, as we host an online session on 3rd July. Our aim is both to ensure that members of the Advisory Forum are briefed on the full range of views of the SME supplier community and to enable them to provide feedback on the discussions after their meetings. We will be joined by Dr Sue Griffiths, Managing Director at Social Development Direct; Victoria Harvey, Managing Director at GovRisk; Dr Beverley Jandziol, Commercial Director – Programmes at the FCDO; and Elaine Woodbine, Commercial Lead - Market Creation, Supply Chain Management at the FCDO.
Activities at 23 Grafton Street this week started on Monday with The Hon. Julia Gillard AC, who spoke on the role of science and soft power as part of The British Foreign Policy Group’s work on this theme with the Wellcome Trust. The former Prime Minister of Australia shared insights from her leadership in science, global health and development policy, and reflected on how the UK can leverage its scientific strengths more effectively as a form of soft power. She also spoke about her work with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), which was a brilliant precursor for the following day as we hosted Laura Frigenti, Chief Executive Officer of GPE and her team for a roundtable with our Heads of Business in international development. Laura discussed how the UK can continue its support for global education and remain a leader in this space, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
Also on Tuesday, we hosted two virtual events. In the morning, “Public-Private Partnerships in the Philippines” provided an overview of the new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) legal framework, bringing insights on best practice in engaging on PPP projects in the Philippines, and showcasing some of the specific opportunities that would be a good fit for UK organisations in the sectors of Transport and Information and Communication Technology.
On Tuesday afternoon, we hosted a deep dive on Upstream project work with the International Finance Corporation. This insightful and engaging session showcased examples of IFC's engagements in the agribusiness and education sectors.
On Wednesday, we held our Climate Change Networking Evening with Virginie Fayolle, Head of Climate at Mott MacDonald International Development Services. Virginie spoke about her career journey in climate adaptation, discussed considerations for locally-led approaches and community engagement, and brought specific examples from a current Mott MacDonald programme in Nepal, supporting the resilience of vulnerable groups and communities to climate risks and other hazards through increased government capacity to prevent, adapt, anticipate and absorb shocks.
Next week, we are looking forward to “Best Practice Approaches to Sector and Place-Based Skills,” taking place on Tuesday, 17 June. In collaboration with our sister organisation the D Group, this event will be a ‘Best Practice Review’ of the approach taken in the nuclear industry to build a truly collaborative approach across Government, industry, academia, education and commerce to address the long-term need for the nuclear industry.
Next Wednesday 18 June we will host a webinar on “Navigating Risk & Opportunity in Ukraine” in partnership with BEI members Prevail Partners. The panel will provide an overview of the current investment landscape, market entry and risk management considerations in Ukraine to support UK organisations navigating opportunities in a rapidly changing environment.
In week of 23rd June, we are hosting a series of events coinciding with London Climate Action Week, including: a special BEI Climate Change Networking Evening with Jamie Fergusson, Global Director for Climate at the International Finance Corporation (IFC); an International Development Heads of Business roundtable with Rebecca Fabrizi, FCDO SIDS Envoy; a roundtable on Achieving Systems Change for Disaster Risk Management and Climate Adaptation; and a virtual panel on Blended Finance as a Catalyst for Systems Change.
At the start of July, our ‘Meet the Ambassador’ programme will see us welcome UK Ambassadors and High Commissioners to Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, South Africa, and a new addition, Algeria.
Looking forward to 8th July, we are delighted to announce an in-person panel titled ‘Rethinking Water Resilience: Strategies for a Changing World’ to celebrate the launch of a new edition of BEI’s Water Resilience Working Group positioning paper. This updated edition explores essential themes that underpin Water Resilience in today's rapidly changing environment, including project and blended finance to accelerate water initiatives, the critical importance of energy security for water security, and the role of governance and political will in driving resilience, offering practical tools for sustainable water management in an evolving landscape.
Much to look forward to, including the sunny weekend ahead…
