$title

Project Summary

Technically the most demanding highway engineering project built in China in recent years.

Project Description

HALCROW

The $820 million, 118km long Chongzun Expressway is both a result of China's global ambitions for itself and an outstanding expression of the way change is being wrought across the country. It has transformed the way millions of people now travel and move goods to market in the region.

It is technically the most demanding highway engineering project built in China in recent years. Climbing to 1,450m above sea level, it has 146 bridges and 18 tunnels, some contiguous, making up 38% of the total road length.

It was opened on time and within budget in December 2005.

For this project Halcrow was a finalist in the Large Consultancy (A) category of the British Expertise International Awards 2006.

Michael Yu was an invaluable part of the team working on the project. He established a systematic approach to quality control, and formed a core of young but capable resident engineers to keep owner and contractor on time and within budget. With Guizhou being his home town, Michael cites this project as being the greatest experience of his career to date. His understanding of Chinese and British culture and language were extremely valuable to the project.

For his role in this project Michael was a finalist in the Individual category of the British Expertise International Awards 2006. MichaelYu
