Project Description
A ground-breaking and innovative project to increase employment and alleviate poverty in KwaZulu Natal, one of South Africa’s economicallychallenged regions, is gaining international acclaim for WYG for its sustainability.
Working with the provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT) and a broad range of other stakeholders, we delivered a £10.7 million EU-funded technical assistance project that included the management and disbursement of a £14 million grant fund supporting over 180 local economic development projects.
There are scores of success stories, from small-scale farmers who now compete effectively in the sugar cane market to the Inina Craft Agency in Eshowe, a group of 150 women living in rural areas who banded together to market and sell traditional crafts. After a six month funding plan, the cooperative now sustains itself, with research showing that the women’s earnings make up a third of their household income and that the extra money is going on improved nutrition and education.
