Gautrain rapid rail link

Following government policy to promote and prioritise public transport as an alternative to private transport, the Gautrain rail project links Johannesburg and Pretoria and Sandton and JIA with the creation of seven new stations between. The new scheme covers 80km with new high speed track allowing the train to travel at speeds between 160-180km/h, resulting in trip between Johannesburg to Hatfield of 35 minutes and Sandton to JIA of 12 minutes.

The scheme links nodes which generate and attract economic development, stimulating growth and job creation. The rail link also fosters a densification of urban form along a corridor which in turn will support use of the rail system.
