Country/Region

Project Summary
Davis Langdon was engaged to provide Specification Consulting and Design Project Management services for this cultural complex of activities devoted to Egyptology
Project Description
The Heneghan Peng Architects submission was the winning entry in 2003 for the international architectural competition to design the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. This competition attracted 1557 designs from 83 countries, the largest global architectural competition in history and was launched by the Egyptian Government under the patronage of UNESCO and the UIA.
The Grand Egyptian Museum, which is to be located at the first desert plateau outside Cairo, between the great Pyramids of Giza and Cairo, is described as the largest museum of Egyptian artefacts in the world and one of the largest museums in the world.
The Museum is envisaged as a cultural complex of activities devoted to Egyptology and will include gallery space (equal to the same size as 6 football fields), a grand staircase culminating in a spectacular view of the pyramids, conference facilities and extensive landscaped park areas.
THE PROJECT
Whilst Davis Langdon has continued to develop its experience and expertise of producing architectural specifications for architects, a natural progression of our services has been towards Design Management or ‘Managing Design Teams’. The role of a Design Manager appointed by the Architect on such an international project is vital. The Design Team consists of a three party Joint Venture and consultants that are dispersed over a wide geographical area. It is important that a Design Manager co-ordinates the Joint Venture and Design Team and acts as a single point of contact with the Client. Our role includes:
- Provide Design Team Organisation Structure.
- Prepare and implement Design Team Procedures document.
- Prepare detailed Design Programmes.
- Monitor and report progress against Design Programme and implement action plans in response to actual design progress.
- Advise the Architect with regard to design progress, process and status of deliverables.
- Facilitate the delivery of relevant and quality design documentation at appropriate times for procurement, contract and construction purposes.
- Organise and chair Client and Design Team meetings when required.
- Prepare payment applications and invoices for work in progress in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Contract.
- Prepare cash flow projections.
- Establish procedures for invoicing and tracking of payments.
- Reviewing correspondence and issues arising, including responses on behalf of the Architect.
- Identify and agree deliverables to be issued on behalf of the Design Team and ensure that the Architect knows what they are required to deliver and when they are required to deliver.
