Project Polar
Country/Region

Project Summary
The elimination of emissions equivalent to more than 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, with major environmental benefits.
Project Description
MOTT MacDONALD
Project Polar involves the thermal destruction of HFC-23, which is 11 700 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
A factory in China was venting approximately 360 tonnes annually - one of the highest HFC-23 emission rates in the world produced by an individual plant.
These emissions are now destroyed in a purpose-built incinerator.
The success of this project is due to the outstanding efforts of the UK-led international team of Mott MacDonald and Climate Change Capital and the exemplary transfer of innovative British expertise to China.
As a result, emissions equivalent to more than 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are now being eliminated every year, with major environmental benefits.
For this project Mott Macdonald was highly commended in the British Expertise International Awards 2007/8.
