Project Summary

A seven-year project to re-establish coastal wetland ecosystems and to sustainably protect their aquatic nurturing and coastal protection functions.

Project Description

LANDELL MILLS LIMITED

The CWPDP has been a seven-year project implemented jointly by Landell Mills and Sinclair Knight Merz of Australia and funded by the World Bank and Danida. The project ends in August 2007. The contracting agency is the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). The value of the project is US$ 58 million and the value of the technical assistance contract is US$ 7.6 million.

The key objective of the project has been to re-establish coastal wetland ecosystems and to sustainably protect their aquatic nurturing and coastal protection functions.

An integrated approach has tackled environmental and social problems in four coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta.

The CWPDP has successfully:

  • Rehabilitated mangrove forests by planting over 37 million trees along 460km of coastland;
  • Preserved coastal ecosystems and limited erosion;
  • Enhanced coastal incomes and livelihoods by solving land ownership problems and resettling over 10,000 people; and
  • Reduced economic risks faced by coastal villagers.

For this project Landell Mills Limited was a prizewinner in the British Expertise International Awards 2007/8.
