Ghana Rural Feeder Roads
Country/Region

Project Summary
To provide improved access to services and markets for the rural poor in Ghana.
Project Description
SCOTT WILSON LIMITED
This project sought to improve access to services and markets for the rural poor in Ghana. Initially focussed on rehabilitating and maintaining feeder roads in a limited geographical area, it evolved into a wider programme of management support to Ghana's Department of Feeder Roads (DFR).
Project success in contributing to sustainable improvements in rural livelihoods is attributed to a combination of the participatory planning processes developed and associated capacity building activities, directed at both public and private sector stakeholders.
DFR retained ownership of the programme, which also piloted the inclusion of labour standards and environmental protection provisions within its contracts.
For this project Scott Wilson Limited was a prizewinner in the British Expertise International Awards 2007/8.
