The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link Project is the most ambitious PPP undertaken in Southern Africa and the largest rail infrastructure project under construction in the world. It has tested the bounds of the South African political and legal system.
British expertise was used to develop a successful legal framework including an innovative solution to enable construction to be completed before the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The project has enabled a safe, cost effective and environmentally friendly transport solution. It supports economic growth for the region and has facilitated Black Economic Empowerment through skills transfer between Pinsent Masons and local law firm, Ledwaba Mazwai.
For this project Pinsent Masons was a finalist in the British Expertise International Awards 2007/8.
