Project Description
Saadiyat Island is a new 2700 hectare urban quarter which will be built on a natural island directly adjacent to the city of Abu Dhabi. Saadiyat is an example of the next generation of smart-growth planning in the Middle East. The island will be home to over 160,000 residents and a working population in excess of 220,000.
Sustainability is a key orientation of the design work; the masterplan developed by EDAW mandates energy-efficient building systems and urban densities, introduces mass-transport with several multi-modal nodes, integrates a wide range of community and education facilities, restores lost mangrove, and expands beachfront eco-systems. The development aims to transform the UAE real-estate industry through outstanding urbanism and environmental leadership.
For this project EDAW was highly commended in the British Expertise International Awards 2007/8.
