The UKHO provides global coverage for paper and digital navigational products for the safety of life at sea. In addition, expert consultancy services including Law of the Sea and Hydrographic Expertise are provided to world wide governments and the commercial sector.
Hydrographic Survey Services, Law of the Sea and Maritime Boundary Advice, Marine Mapping for GIS, Marine Cartographic Training, Bespoke Marine Cartographic Products, specialist Hydrographic Services.
The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has supplied large commercial vessels involved in international trade with it's Admiralty Charts and Publications for over 200 years. Admiralty products are designed to support safe navigation and are a mandatory requirement and an essential element of international vessels' safety regime and equipment.
Through the delivery of these products UKHO has developed a specialist expertise in all key aspects of hydrography and hydrographic information management. UKHO brings this expertise to the wider marine community to aid decision making and to support sustainable development and environmental management in coastal zones and marine areas.
The following hydrographic and marine services are available from UKHO:
Hydrographic Survey Service:- the provision of a comprehensive project management and consulting service for hydrographic projects. The service includes scoping, contracting, supervising, quality assuring and where applicable executing hydrographic surveys.
Law of the Sea and Maritime Boundary Advice:- the provision of expert advice on the delimitation of national maritime boundaries in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Marine Mapping for GIS:- the creation of specialist Marine and Coastal Zone Mapping for use in GIS to support decision-making and therefore encourage sustainable development and environmental protection in marine areas.
Marine Cartographic Training:- the provision of training in Marine Cartography including the creation of Electronic Navigational Charts.
Hydrographic Capacity and Capability:- the provision of specialist experience-based hydrographic services to support the activities of local hydrographic offices to facilitate compliance with the requirements of the SOLAS convention. This includes training and institutional strengthening of national hydrographic services through training and technology transfer.
Bespoke Product Development:- the creation of bespoke marine cartographic products to support customer requirements and applications.
The provision of consultancy services is a relatively new activity within UKHO, but the following contracts have already been won/delivered:-
Red Sea/PERSGA:- planning and supervision of GEF-funded resurvey of vessel traffic separation scheme to support environmental protection.
Finland:- planning of national hydrographic resurvey programme.
Malaysia:- delivery of compared to programme of Marine cartographic Training including the production of Electronic Navigational Charts.
Saudi Arabia:- advice in the commissioning of hydrographic survey equipment and training in handling of bathymetric survey data.
Sri Lanka:- advice and training on the commissioning of hydrographic survey equipment.
Yemen:- production of bespoke charts to indicate fishery limits.
Barbados:- advice to legal team with respect to arbitration on extent of Exclusive Economic Zones.
Note:- in addition to the above, the traditional business of UKHO is the creation and distribution of its worldwide series of Admiralty Charts and Publications. This activity has brought it into contact with all major hydrographic offices worldwide enabling UKHO to gain experience in handling information from international sources.
