Kuwait Environment Public Authority – 26 July.
I attended a useful meeting at British Water on Monday 26 July – one or two British Expertise members were there too, as well as a few who probably should become members! The speaker was Engineer Mohammad al-Enezi, Director of the Kuwaiti Industrial Development Department at KEPA. He outlined some areas where the Kuwaitis are very keen to work with UK companies in the combating the source of marine pollution, rehabilitating landfill sites, and to partner in an immense project to construct an entire new industrial city 100km outside Kuwait.
There are a number of opportunities in Kuwait - one of the most shocking to emerge from the meeting was that a major pumping station at Mishref had broken down in August 2009 and since then has been pumping 150,000 cubic metres of raw sewage a day into the Gulf. Understandably the Kuwaitis are keen to do something about it and require help. Another environmental crisis involves the rehabilitation of closed landfills which are increasingly a health and pollution risk. The new industrial city, which was approved by the Kuwaiti cabinet in January 2010, will involve the transport of entire factories over the next 2-5 years. Much needs to be done including the entire infrastructure design and build.
British Expertise is watching the opportunities in Kuwait carefully with a view to hosting more delegations here, and a possible infrastructure-related visit in the spring of 2011.
